Position Summary:
A leading private equity firm is seeking a highly skilled Petroleum Data Engineer to support its portfolio companies in the upstream gas production sector. This individual will play a critical role in leveraging data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML) to optimize gas production, forecasting, and operational efficiency. Collaborating closely with portfolio companies’ digital and engineering teams, this position will focus on building innovative data products, automating workflows, and solving complex engineering challenges through data-driven solutions.

Key Responsibilities:
Data Engineering & Automation:
  • Develop, optimize, and maintain data pipelines to automate workflows in upstream gas production and forecasting.
  • Implement scalable data solutions to support production monitoring, reservoir management, and operational efficiency.
  • Work with structured and unstructured datasets, integrating data from various sources, including sensors, production logs, and well data.

AI & Machine Learning Applications:
  • Design and deploy AI/ML models to solve engineering problems such as production forecasting, reservoir simulation, and equipment failure prediction.
  • Analyze historical and real-time production data to identify patterns, trends, and optimization opportunities.
  • Collaborate with domain experts to ensure AI/ML models align with engineering principles and practical use cases.

Collaboration & Product Development:
  • Partner with digital and engineering teams to build and deploy data products tailored to portfolio companies’ needs.
  • Act as a technical advisor to portfolio companies, guiding their adoption of data analytics and digital transformation initiatives.
  • Develop user-friendly interfaces and dashboards for stakeholders to interact with and visualize data insights.

Data Strategy & Governance:
  • Ensure data quality, accuracy, and consistency across all pipelines and data products.
  • Implement data governance policies to secure sensitive production data and adhere to industry regulations.
  • Drive innovation by staying updated on emerging trends in petroleum data analytics and AI/ML applications.

Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Petroleum Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, or related fields.
  • 5+ years of experience in upstream oil and gas, with a strong focus on gas production and forecasting.
  • Proven experience in applying AI and ML techniques to solve engineering-related problems in the petroleum sector.

Technical Expertise:
  • Proficiency in Python, R, or similar programming languages for data analysis and ML model development.
  • Hands-on experience with tools like TensorFlow, PyTorch, or scikit-learn for AI/ML applications.
  • Strong understanding of upstream production workflows, including reservoir simulation and production optimization.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS, Google Cloud) and data tools like Databricks or Azure Synapse.
  • Expertise in building dashboards and visualizations using Power BI, Spotfire, or similar tools.

Preferred Skills:
  • Knowledge of digital oilfield technologies, IoT integration, and real-time data processing.
  • Experience with data governance frameworks and tools like Microsoft Purview.
  • Familiarity with public datasets and industry platforms such as Enverus or IHS.

Soft Skills:
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and a passion for innovation.
  • Excellent communication skills to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to work across diverse teams and organizations.
