Houston based family office seeks Controller with strong tax expertise. Great compensation package and SW Houston location. In office role.
Position Overview
The Controller is responsible for maintaining the financial integrity and operational infrastructure of the office. This role requires a hands-on accounting professional who can manage day-to-day financial operations while also overseeing technology systems and supporting strategic initiatives. The Controller reports directly to the President and Chief Investment Officer and works closely with the investment team, tax advisors, and external service providers. Key Responsibilities Financial Accounting & Reporting
Maintain accurate and timely accounting records and general ledger in Sage accounting system
Maintain accurate investment accounting in Addepar, including position reconciliation, cash flows, transaction recording, and performance attribution
Prepare comprehensive monthly financial reports for the family and office leadership, including balance sheets, income statements, cash flow analyses, and variance explanations
Oversee accounts payable and receivable processes, bank reconciliations, and cash management
Coordinate annual audit processes and serve as primary liaison with external auditors
Manage capital call and distribution workflows for private fund investments
Tax Support & Compliance
Provide comprehensive support to the tax manager including documentation gathering, K-1 reconciliation and analysis, and preparation of tax schedules
Maintain organized records for tax compliance and reporting purposes
Assist with estimated tax calculations and payment processing
Help track REP hours for principal
Technology & Systems Management
Work with TeamLogic to Maintain and optimize IT infrastructure for the office, including system security, user access, and vendor relationships
Manage OneDrive file organization, folder structures, and permission settings to ensure data security and appropriate access controls
Support the office's AI initiative including evaluation of tools, implementation of approved solutions, and training staff on effective usage
Identify opportunities for process automation and system integration to improve operational efficiency
Operational Management
Develop and maintain internal controls and accounting policies to protect family assets
Manage relationships with banks, custodians, fund administrators, and other service providers
Support special projects including entity formation, fund subscriptions, and investment due diligence as needed
Ensure business continuity through proper documentation and backup procedures
Qualifications Required:
5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a controller or senior accounting role and Big 4 or relevant CPA firm tax experience
CPA certification or active pursuit thereof
Expert proficiency in Sage accounting software
Experience with Addepar or similar investment accounting/reporting platforms desired
Advanced Excel skills and comfort learning new technology platforms
Strong understanding of investment structures including private equity and real estate
Preferred:
Previous family office or RIA experience as well as public accounting tax experience
Familiarity with Microsoft 365 administration, particularly OneDrive and SharePoint
Knowledge of entity structures, consolidated reporting, and multi-entity accounting
Experience supporting tax compliance processes and working with tax professionals
Project management experience, particularly around systems implementation
Interest in emerging technologies and AI applications in finance/operations
