SUMMARY:
Our growing Law firm client in central Houston seeks an experienced Controller due to growth.
DESCRIPTION:
Our client is a well established, prestigious and Houston based law firm. They have grown significantly and need to add a Controller to their established accounting team and to the firm leadership team. This role will work closely with firm leadership in the strategic financial positioning of the firm, will manage a team of accountants and will work in a friendly, team oriented environment with great benefits.
Specifically, this role will have the following responsibilities:
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Monitors cash flow and supervises cash management including, maintaining adequate compensating balances, and overseeing performance of daily check and credit card deposits.
Prepares the annual operational budget; monitors and prepares monthly variance reports.
Prepares monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports; prepares written analysis of variances to budget.
Prepares quarterly federal and state payroll tax reports and year-end federal payroll tax reports. Prepares annual property tax rendition report.
Assists in the management and administration of the Firm’s employee retirement plan.
Assists in the preparation of schedules and work papers for the preparation of the Firm’s annual partnership tax return.
Establishes and maintains appropriate internal controls to safeguard assets and to ensure that proper accounting of transactions occurs and to promote operational efficiency within the Accounting Department and throughout the Firm.
Prepares work papers and schedules for the annual audit performed by the outside public accounting firm.
Supervise billings assistants
Assist with collections
Supervise accounts payable and receivable
Performs special projects and other duties as requested.
Processing of accounts payable and cash receipts, performance of bank reconciliations and client trust fund accounting, preparation of client invoices, collections, fixed asset depreciation schedules, journal and general ledger entries, coordination of the processing of the semi-monthly payroll through the outside payroll service company, and operation and use of the industry specific accounting computer systems and related software.
REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor of Science in Accounting or Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting is required. A Certified Public Accountant is strongly preferred.
Minimum of six years of progressively responsible experience in public accounting and/or general accounting in a law firm, including a focus on tax preparation and a minimum of three years of supervisory experience.
Knowledge of accounting and financial management principles sufficient to properly operate the Accounting Department. Ability to concentrate and conduct complex and detailed analyses of financial situations. Ability to demonstrate consistent integrity in personal and fiduciary matters.
Effective written and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to communicate well with all levels of personnel, including Partners, Associates, Managers and Support Staff.
Ability to work a full-time work week, with additional hours as needed, particularly during close cycles and year-end.
